This year has been a particularly harsh winter for many of us. Record snowfalls hit areas of the country that weren’t quite used to it. You might have experienced a full week or more stuck indoors with no school, remote school or remote work while the kids were home from school. It’s hard to keep up with the chaos of staying cozy indoors, but with one dedicated weekend, a planned trip to your favorite Goodwill® and a little help along the way, you’ll be setting yourself up for a successful spring.

When it comes to a mood boost, sometimes there is nothing better than the satisfaction of cleaning or decluttering an area of your home. Start with an area that you pass every day. Once you complete your tasks — compiled items that you haven’t used or have grown out of into a donation bag to drop off at Goodwill, dusted, vacuumed, cleaned the surfaces and floors, and left room for new inspiration and decoration — you’ll have a physical reset that can be a mental one too. When I’m stressed, there’s no better fix than to tackle a task with straightforward instructions with a long-term payoff (i.e., take everything off the table, sort into piles, fill a donation bag, clean a surface, reorganize the remaining items, take a look at the newly opened space and imagine what could fit there next).

By bringing your donations to Goodwill and browsing the shelves and racks for new-to-you items, you’re participating in the magic of a circular economy. Your donations and purchases support your community, funding jobs, job training programs and other support services for those who need them, while keeping items out of the landfills and reducing demand for new items to be manufactured. Plus, it provides an affordable way to rotate in new décor for each season. You can change your décor as your taste changes, without having to feel a hit to your wallet.

Photo: @jill.dahlia

I love the creativity of Goodwill shoppers, who spot something unique and can envision a new purpose for it almost instantly. How pretty is this home with the mismatched set of beautiful China plates above the door? It’s such a fun idea, especially for a room with a big door or window near the kitchen.

Photo: @thecoffeyhousefl

I’ve come to learn, in my own experience and in stories shared by Goodwill shoppers on social media, that one of the most overlooked and underrated sections of the store is the art section. Not only can you come across some pretty incredible finds — think paintings and oil pastels worth hundreds of dollars. You can also come across some incredibly beautiful and valuable frames, too. This Goodwill shopper found the latest painting for her gallery wall at Goodwill. It’s a great addition to such a lovely collection!

Photo: @wishflowervtg

Of course, if you’re anything like me, one area of the house that constantly needs refreshing is the mug cabinet. It can be so easy to accumulate mugs of all different shapes, sizes and themes. Yet, somehow, you find yourself without a matching set to use when guests are over. Mugs are a great, versatile gift, which is part of the reason we collect so many. But it’s also why you might want to go through the mugs you like and don’t like to donate the ones you no longer use as much. That way, another Goodwill shopper can find them and treat them like the treasure they are. Just like this Goodwill shopper who came across a set of vintage 1980s Linda Stymeist Colorways mugs for $3.99 each — the whole set is sold at other retailers for $100+. What a deal! Plus, the pastels are perfect for springtime weather and springtime holidays.

Even if you can’t dedicate a full weekend to a home cleanout and shopping refresh — realistically, most of us don’t have that luxury — you can still get after it piece by piece. Pick a section of your home to tackle each week. By the end of the month, you’ll be amazed at how much you have accomplished, and how refreshed not only your home feels, but you feel too.

Find Your Next Spring Inspiration at Goodwill

Love thrifting and fashion?
