National Clean Out Your Closet Week (March 15\u201321) is about more than clearing space;\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0about creating room for new opportunities. At Goodwill\u00ae, donations fuel mission services that help people build skills, find\u00a0employment\u00a0and achieve greater independence. Robert\u2019s journey is a powerful example of how those opportunities can transform lives.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Robert came to Goodwill after hearing about services through Iowa Vocational Rehabilitation Services. He was also receiving Supported Community Living services through Goodwill. After being unemployed for some time, Robert made a pivotal decision: he wanted support to return to work and rebuild his sense of purpose.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Path to Employment<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Through the Goodwill Opportunity Accelerator\u00ae\u00a0(OA), Robert found a clear and supportive path forward. The OA\u00a0is the Goodwill framework for helping individuals prepare for employment by first understanding their needs,\u00a0strengths\u00a0and goals. From assessments to skill-building and employment support, the process is designed to address immediate barriers and create\u00a0a strong foundation\u00a0for long-term success.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Working closely with Goodwill staff, Robert\u00a0identified\u00a0a career path that aligned with his interests and abilities. He enrolled in the Custodial Technician Occupational Skills Training (OST) course, where he gained hands-on janitorial skills essential for success in the workplace. While the coursework was challenging, Robert stayed committed to the process,\u00a0finding pride in pushing himself beyond his comfort zone.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to training, Goodwill\u00a0provided assistance\u00a0with job applications and supported employment, helping Robert translate his new skills into real-world opportunities. Ongoing guidance ensured he had the encouragement and tools needed to stay motivated and focused.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Completing the Custodial Technician course became one of Robert\u2019s greatest accomplishments. Shortly afterward, his hard work paid off: he began a new job with Goodwill of the Heartland\u00a0(Cedar Rapids, IA). For Robert, employment meant more than a paycheck;\u00a0it meant independence,\u00a0confidence\u00a0and the ability to give back.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With steady income, Robert now helps support family members and others in his life who are facing financial challenges. The impact of employment has extended beyond his own goals, strengthening his connections and sense of community.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Surrounded With Positivity<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Reflecting on his journey, Robert shares an insight that captures his outlook:\u00a0\u201cIn life you\u00a0have to\u00a0surround yourself with positive people. Negative people will drag you down. Surround yourself with people like me.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During National Clean Out Your Closet Week, Robert\u2019s story reminds us how donated goods help power programs that create real change. Through the\u00a0OA, individuals like Robert gain the skills, support, and confidence they need to move\u00a0forward,\u00a0proving\u00a0that when opportunity is within reach, positive change follows.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
